This course will introduce group counseling theories and leadership skills and techniques. This will include group dynamics, group process, and developmental stage theories. Group leadership training will include style and approaches, methods, and evaluation. Research and literature will be addressed. Students will have a chance to “try on” group membership and leadership.

This course will include human growth and development and personality formation across the lifespan, including death and dying issues. Normal and abnormal behavior and developmental crises will be addressed, and personality theory will be used as a way to organize ideas about intervention. We will consider individual, couple, and family development and the effects of developmental issues on relationships and personality formation. The effect of cultural and socioeconomic status and position on development and personality formation will also be examined.

This is a practical, "hands-on" course, and a significant portion of class time is dedicated to experiential learning. In addition, students will develop a facility in giving effective feedback.

MCPC2030: Trauma and Crisis 创伤与危机

This course will address trauma and crisis theory and counseling. Multidisciplinary responses and referrals will be included. Cognitive, behavioral, and neurological effects associated with trauma will be addressed as well as brief, intermediate, and long-term treatment approaches. Assessment and treatment strategies for families, couples, children, and individuals in crisis will be addressed along with principles of intervention for those with mental or emotional disorders during times of crisis, emergency, or disaster. The course will address the means of connecting clients with resources in the community during crisis and disaster as well as follow-up referrals. Resilience-focused models of intervention including personal and community qualities that enable persons to cope with adversity, trauma, tragedy, threat, or other stressors will be presented. The course will also address familial trauma: divorce, death and dying, and recovery principles for individuals, couples, and families.

This course provides a professional orientation to ethics in counseling. Professional counseling considerations such as consent to treatment, scope of practice, counselor-client privilege, confidentiality, and threats to safety for self and others will be addressed. The relationship between the practitioner’s sense of self and human values, ethical and moral mandates, relationship with and responsibilities to other providers and legal entities will be explored. Further, advocacy processes needed to address institutional and social barriers that impede access, equality, and success for clients will be examined. Differences in ethical standards in different work settings (private practice, public practice, collaboration, team-based, institutional, etc.) will be discussed.

MCPC2069: Introduction to Practicum: Clinical Training Preparation 实习导论:临床培训准备

This clinical preparation course is rooted in evidence-based Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). Centered on interpersonal relationships, IPT assists clients in enhancing interpersonal functioning and relieving psychological distress, and it can be well integrated with psychodynamic therapy, expressive arts therapy and other therapeutic approaches. Over 10 weeks, this course delivers systematic training covering counseling ethics, initial intake sessions, child and adolescent counseling, case conceptualization and other core clinical topics, guiding novice counselors to develop integrative clinical thinking beyond a single theoretical framework. This course is delivered through the multimedia platforms Canvas and Zoom, incorporating text-based discussions, recorded and live video sessions, as well as Q&A interactions. Students are required to complete the assigned readings and experiential exercises, submit assignments on Canvas, and interact with fellow classmates.

Practicum 1 is rooted in psychodynamic theory, Jungian analytical psychology, and expressive arts therapy. The course incorporates narrative inquiry and somatic awareness perspectives in addressing core clinical issues in counseling practice. Through a group supervision format, the course delivers ten weeks of systematic training, covering counseling ethics and professional stance, the initial interview and parental/family interview, symbols and metaphors in the case, the counselor's somatic awareness and the client's imagery presentation, transference and countertransference in the counseling process, and overall review and organization of the case process. The course helps supervisees deepen their understanding of clients' inner worlds within the group setting and enhances their clinical sensitivity and integrative practical skills. This course is delivered through Canvas and Zoom, incorporating text‑based discussions, live video sessions, and interactive online exchanges. Students are required to fully participate in group supervision, complete assigned assignments, and actively interact with classmates.

MCPC2071: Advanced Clinical Supervision 高级实训督导

This course will address different types of clinical documentation, the importance of maintaining accurate and confidential records, and how documentation impacts the therapeutic process. Students will develop skills to effectively document client intakes, develop treatment plans, produce progress notes, and create case summaries. By the end of the course, students will be able to formulate clear, concise, and professional clinical documentation that addresses therapeutic goals within any clinical setting.

MCPC2078: Psychopathology: Depression, Anxiety, & Suicidality 心理病理学:抑郁、焦虑与自杀倾向

This course will include the major ICD-10 diagnostic criteria, client assessment tools, case conceptualization, and treatment planning specifically for depression and anxiety disorders, and suicidality. Appropriate use of assessment in a transpersonal, whole-person framework will be addressed.

MCPC6002: Foundations of Imagery Communication Psychotherapy 意象对话心理治疗的理论基础

This course aims to help students understand the fundamental theory of Imagery Communication Psychotherapy (ICP) and acquire basic proficiency in its techniques. It is suitable for psychotherapists, counselors, psychiatrists, social workers, school counselors, teachers, and medical professionals. Students will explore the historical development and founding principles of ICP, learn about the "primitive" imagery cognitive mode, study how imagery can be used to reveal and regulate psychological disorders, and examine theories of psychological energy, psychological disorder formation, maintenance, and resolution. Learning takes place through experiential exercises, instructor demonstrations, peer practice, and guided discussion.

本课程侧重于“意象沟通”(Imagery Communication,简称 IC)独特的个性理论及其相关临床技术。学员将探讨个性如何通过意象进行建构、表达与转化。课程核心议题涵盖:IC 个性理论的基础、个性结构的形成与发展、个人意象解构技术(即“子人格”工作)、子人格关系的动力机制与调节、针对特定子人格的干预技术、动物子人格理论与应用、子人格图谱的绘制与解读,以及对自身子人格的体验式探索与整合。本课程的难度大致相当于 IC 中级培训水平,同时在学术深度与临床应用层面进行了拓展。

This course focuses on the distinctive personality theory of Imagery Communication (IC) and its associated clinical techniques. Students will explore how personality is structured, expressed, and transformed through imagery. Key topics include the foundations of IC personality theory, the development of personality structures, personal imagery deconstruction techniques (sub-personality work), the dynamics and regulation of sub-personality relationships, techniques for working with individual sub-personalities, animal sub-personality theory and applications, mapping and interpretation of sub-personality diagrams, and experiential exploration and integration of one’s own sub-personalities. This course broadly corresponds to intermediate-level IC training, while offering expanded academic depth and clinical application.

This course examines the application of IC in behavior change, habit formation, psychosomatic issues, and body-based therapeutic work. It emphasizes the integration of the mind and body through imagery-based interventions. Key topics include: introduction to the sensorimotor (primitive-layer) cognitive system, techniques for establishing mind-body connection, flow and accumulation of psychological energy in the body, the three major somatic energy centers (i.e., head, chest, and abdomen), identification and resolution of psychosomatic issues, IC-based somatic techniques, applications in goal achievement and personal development, use of IC for weight management, intervention in addictive behaviors, habit formation and behavioral transformation, and mind-body imagery exercises.

This course covers: assessment, appraisal, and testing of individuals, including basic concepts of standardized and non-standardized testing and other assessment techniques, norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessment, statistical concepts, social and cultural factors related to assessment and evaluation of individuals and groups, and ethical strategies for selecting, administering and interpreting assessment instruments and techniques in counseling.
